Cómo fomentar la autonomía de los niños durante las vacaciones

How to foster children's independence during the holidays

Summer is the best time for little ones to gain independence: from getting dressed on their own to packing their backpack. With patience, play, and confidence… they feel capable and happy!

Summer is that time when everything changes a little: schedules, routines, the pace of the day... and precisely because of that, it is an ideal time to work (without rushing) on our little ones' autonomy. Taking advantage of the holidays to help them gain self-confidence, learn to do things on their own, and feel more capable is a gift that will last much longer than summer.

Here are some practical tips, divided by age, to foster autonomy naturally and respectfully.

For children aged 1 to 2 years: small steps, big achievements

At this age, everything is a discovery. Children begin to explore the world and want to do things "like adults." Our task: to accompany them calmly, giving them small opportunities every day.

  • Let them choose between two options: a red or blue shirt, a cookie or a banana. It's not about deciding everything, but about starting to have a voice.

  • Involve them in daily tasks: let them help you pick up toys, put dirty clothes in the basket, or open their water bottle.

  • Encourage free play: toys that don't do "everything" for them, such as ride-on toys or pull toys, help them learn to move, decide where to go, and gain confidence.

For children aged 3 to 4 years: practice, fail, and try again

At this age, little ones already have more motor and cognitive skills. It's time to expand their scope of action, always with patience.

  • Encourage them to get dressed on their own (even if it's at their own pace). If they don't put their shoes on correctly, it's okay. They are learning.

  • Involve them in summer routines: setting the breakfast table, watering a plant, putting away their outdoor toys... or cleaning their ride-on toy after playing in the park.

  • Give them decision-making spaces: what game they want to take to the park, what fruit they prefer for a snack... small decisions, but important for them.

For children aged 5 to 6 years: reinforcing their independence

They are already at that stage where they want to do many things "alone" and, what's more, they can. Here, reinforcing their self-esteem with confidence and responsibility is key.

  • Have them pack their backpack for the pool or park. Make a list with them and let them do it alone (even if you check afterward).

  • Propose "grown-up" challenges: helping a younger sibling, organizing a picnic, preparing a smoothie with your supervision...

  • Invite them to resolve small conflicts with words ("how do you think you can take turns with the ball?"). This helps them develop social skills and emotional autonomy.

The most important thing is to remember that autonomy is not imposed, it is accompanied. It's not about them doing everything alone, but about giving them the space and confidence to try. Summer is the best playground for that: without haste, without pressure, and with many opportunities to grow... through play.
