If this is your first summer as a parent with a little one… take a deep breath. Yes, it's hot, schedules go haywire, routines disappear, and all you want is for them to nap without it turning into a battle. Welcome to the club.
But it's also the first time you're sharing a summer with them. Their first splashes, their first long, leisurely strolls, their first games in the sand, on the grass, or on the terrace. And believe us, that's a summer you won't forget.
That's why we've prepared this simple and realistic checklist to help you survive summer with young children... and truly enjoy it.
1. Sun protection (but real)
It's not enough to say "it's already in the bag." You have to use it. Daily. And reapply. Choose pediatric, broad-spectrum creams, and if possible, in an easy-to-apply format (sprays or sticks usually help).
Practical mom tip: keep it in your purse or diaper bag. If it's buried in your backpack, it won't get used.
2. Water, water, water
And not just for drinking. A spray bottle with cool water can be your salvation on hot days. A basin of water on the balcony too. And if there's a pool… be prepared for them to want to get in at all hours.
Important: hydration also in the form of fruit, homemade smoothies, natural popsicles…
3. Movement games
In the heat, desire wanes… but not the desire to play! If you have a ride-on toy, a small motorcycle, or an electric vehicle like ours, take the play to the garden, the sidewalk, or the park.
Movement regulates sleep, mood, and appetite. You don't need a lot of space, just some shade and a desire to move.
4. Easy clothes (and endless changes)
Avoid impossible buttons and opt for comfortable, cool, and easy-to-remove clothing. Hooded towel? Your ally. Swim diaper? Saves the day.
And yes, you can never have too many changes of clothes. Bring at least two. Because there will be sand, ice cream, water, sweat, and an occasional leak.
5. Flexible routines, but routines
We know it's summer. But little ones still need some structure: eating at roughly the same time, some rest in the middle of the day, and screen-free playtime.
You can loosen the pace without losing balance.
6. Low expectations, high humor
Yes, there will be chaotic days. But also unexpected laughter, shared naps, unplanned games. Don't expect everything to be perfect. Just look for space to enjoy.
Because your first summer with your little one won't come again. And even if it catches you tired, overwhelmed, or with your hair in a clip... it will be the summer you'll always remember.
Ready? Then grab your list, your water, your sunscreen, and your favorite wheeled toy. This summer is yours. And it's going to be unforgettable.
