Feeding is not the same as nourishing. We give you some keys to make food the great ally for your little ones' growth and development.

What foods do we provide our children with? Do we opt for healthy food and appropriate amounts? Childhood is a crucial stage in life, as it is when growth and development occur. Nutrition plays a fundamental role in this process, as it provides the necessary nutrients for the growth of bones, organs, and tissues, as well as for the development of the immune and nervous systems.

A balanced diet for children should include a variety of foods that provide essential nutrients, such as proteins, carbohydrates, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals. But how does this translate into our daily lives? How should we put together our children's menus? Here are some tips to make their day-to-day healthier:

1. Variety of foods: Introducing a wide range of foods into children's diets is fundamental. This ensures they receive a variety of essential nutrients. Include fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and low-fat dairy products in their daily meals. If you wish, you can refer to the Harvard plate, where half would be vegetables and fruits; a quarter of the plate would consist of whole grains; and the last portion of the plate corresponds to proteins.

2. Portion control: It is important to pay attention to portion sizes to avoid excessive calories. Children should consume appropriate portions for their age and activity level. A trick for this is to use smaller plates to adjust portions and avoid overeating.

3. Avoid processed foods: Foods high in added sugars, saturated fats, and sodium should be limited. Processed foods, such as sodas, cookies, and potato chips, often lack nutrients and can contribute to long-term health problems.

4. Hydration: Water is essential for children's health. Avoid sugary drinks and encourage water consumption. Keep a water bottle within reach of children so they can hydrate throughout the day.

We know that theory is simpler than practice, which is why we bring you some healthy and balanced dishes that, in addition to being delicious, have great nutritional value:

- Oatmeal with fruit: Oatmeal is an excellent source of fiber and energy. Add banana and strawberries for a touch of natural sweetness and, if you prefer, some nut butter.

  • Lentil salad with tofu and zucchini

- Chicken salad: Mix grilled chicken with fresh vegetables and low-fat dressing for a light yet nutritious meal.

Snack ideas:

- Fresh fruits: Grapes, apples, or pear slices are delicious and easy-to-carry options.

- Turkey and avocado sandwich: Use whole wheat bread, lean turkey, and avocado for a sandwich full of protein and healthy fats.

Dinner ideas:

- Whole wheat pasta with vegetables and grilled chicken: Whole wheat pasta is rich in fiber, and vegetables and chicken provide a variety of nutrients.

- Fruit is always an excellent option; you can also combine it with yogurts (preferably natural) and gelatin.
