More outdoor play, less screen time

Injusa|
We know. Everyday life can be exhausting, and sometimes we resort to screens more than we'd like. Today we reflect on the benefits of outdoor play and give you some tips to make it easier to remove screens from your children's routine.

We live in a world where screens are increasingly present in children's lives. From a very young age, electronic devices have become a common resource for entertaining the little ones. However, outdoor play remains fundamental for their physical, emotional, and social development. Why is it so important? How can we encourage more screen-free playtime? Today, we’ll tell you.

The benefits of outdoor play

When children play outside, they not only have fun but also strengthen their bodies, minds, and social skills.

1. They move more and grow better
Playing outdoors involves running, jumping, climbing, riding a bicycle or a ride-on toy. These activities help them strengthen muscles and bones, improve coordination, and develop balance. Additionally, sun exposure allows them to synthesize vitamin D, which is key for their growth.

2. They develop their creativity and imagination
Open spaces offer infinite possibilities for free play. A park, a garden, or a simple sidewalk can become a racetrack, a jungle expedition, or an imaginary city. This type of play stimulates creativity and symbolic thinking, which are essential in childhood.

3. They interact better with other children
Children who play outdoors tend to develop better social skills. By sharing with others, they learn to take turns, cooperate, and resolve conflicts. Moreover, in free play, children not only follow rules but also create them, fostering their autonomy.

4. They enjoy the moment and reduce stress
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, active outdoor play helps reduce anxiety and improves mood in children. Moving in open spaces, without constant stimuli from a screen, allows them to relax and connect with the present and their surroundings.

Why limit screen time?

Excessive screen time in young children can affect their development. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that children under 2 years old have no screen exposure and that children between 2 and 5 years old do not exceed one hour per day.

Some effects of excessive screen time:
- Delayed language development: Children who spend too much time on electronic devices interact less with their parents and caregivers, affecting their vocabulary.
Less physical activity: Spending hours in front of a screen reduces movement time and can promote a sedentary lifestyle.
- Increased irritability and decreased concentration: Excessive digital stimuli can make children less patient and have difficulty staying attentive to other activities.

How to encourage outdoor play

It's not about completely eliminating screens, but about finding a balance and prioritizing real playtime. Here are some ideas:

Create an outdoor play routine: Dedicate at least 30 minutes a day to going out and playing with your child. This can be in the park, in the garden, or on the street.
Offer toys that encourage movement: Bicycles, ride-on toys, and electric cars are ideal for children to enjoy while developing motor skills.
Make play a family activity: It's not just about "telling them to go play," but about sharing the moment. A bike ride together or a team game will make them enjoy it even more.
Let them get bored: Children don't need constant entertainment. When they get bored, their imagination is activated, and they find new ways to play.

Outdoor play is a necessity, not a luxury. It is the path for children to be more active, creative, and happy. Screens can be part of their lives, but they should not replace the experience of running, exploring, and playing with other children.

If we want our children to enjoy a full childhood, let's give them more moments of real play and less time in front of a screen. The best adventure begins outside the home!
