The toy industry is once again at a critical juncture. European Union lawmakers are updating the Toy Safety Directive. As active members of the Spanish Association of Toy Manufacturers
(AEFJ) and Toy Industries of Europe (TIE), we want to share our position and the message that AEFJ is sending to those who still have time to influence this process. First, we firmly believe that children's safety is a priority.
However, to truly protect our little ones, we need laws that are realistic and enforceable. Creating regulations that are impracticable or impossible to document only complicates the scenario for companies committed to complying with existing standards. This benefits no one and can actually harm innovation and competitiveness.
Furthermore, we understand that protecting our environment from harmful substances is a shared responsibility. Therefore, these regulations should be incorporated into legislation applicable to all consumer products, not just toys. Legislation like REACH is an example of how this balance can be achieved, regulating chemical substances to protect both human health and the environment.
The regulation of online marketplaces and similar platforms is also fundamental. These channels should not continue to be a way for dangerous products from third countries to enter our homes. It is vital to ensure that effective legal measures are in place to hold these platforms accountable. Regulations affecting market entry must be implemented, because only then will we be talking about committed, effective, and global safety conditions.
Last but not least, it is essential that adequate resources are allocated for the enforcement and control of these standards. Toy safety cannot be left to chance. If regulations become more complex and costly to monitor, the effectiveness of the safety system is reduced. There must be a real commitment to the supervision and compliance of these regulations to ensure that they benefit those they are intended to protect.
